The tennis lessons are supported by the LA84 FOUNDATION.
About LA84: Mission: Life Ready Through Sport. The LA84
Foundation is endowed with surplus funds from the 1984
Los Angeles Olympic Games. Their mission is to serve
youth through sport and to increase knowledge of sport
and its impact on people's lives. The LA84 Foundation
supports a wide array of youth sports programming. They
award grants to youth sports organizations within the
eight southernmost counties of California. They also
conduct their own youth sports and coaching education
programs, a number of which have become models for similar
programs nationwide. The LA84 Foundation operates the
largest sports research library in North America, the
Paul Ziffren Sports Resource Center. It is a state-of-the-art
research facility and learning center dedicated to the
advancement of sports knowledge and scholarship. The
Foundation also maintains a sizable collection of historic
sport art and artifacts much of which was inherited
from the former Helms sports halls of fame. The LA84
Foundation is a private nonprofit institution. The Foundation
has committed more than $160 million to accomplish its
mission since 1985. To date, two million boys and girls,
and more than 1,000 youth sports organizations throughout
Southern California have benefited from the endowment.
Also don't forget the affordable, and in some cases
FREE, swimming lessons provided by OPERATION SPLASH.
Operation Splash aims to decrease the frequency of drowning,
one of the leading causes of accidental death among
young people, especially for African American and Latino
kids, who historically have low aquatics participation
rates. For example, nearly 60 percent of African American
and Latino youth cannot swim, which is twice the rate
of white kids, according to USA Swimming, the sport's
governing body. OPERATION SPLASH opened on the first
day of summer (Saturday, June 21) and continues through
Labor Day (Monday, September 1st), with an additional
two weeks extended run through mid-September at seven
of the 35 pools. To learn more about Operation Splash
and eligibility requirements, individuals can visit
the City Recreation and Parks Department website (www.laparks.org/dos/aquatic/aquatic.htm
or call toll free 888-LA-PARKS (888-527-2757). Registration
is on-site at participating pool locations.
